SUNSHINE IN THE SCHOOLYARD
Joyful facts from Schools for Haiti
While Haiti faces unimaginable challenges, your support is helping us write a very different story — one filled with possibility, perseverance, and progress. In a country battling hunger, violence, and systemic collapse, Schools for Haiti stands as a rare oasis of stability. Our mission continues — quietly but powerfully — delivering nourishment, education, and dignity every single day. Here’s what you’re making possible — contrasted with the harsh realities Haitian families face.
EDUCATION: Restoring the Right to Learn
+ 2,246 students enrolled across 10 campuses
→ Reality: Fewer than 3 in 10 Haitian children finish primary school. Many never attend at all due to tuition fees, unsafe travel conditions, or school closures. Just 1% will ever wear a high school graduation cap.
Impact: Every student enrolled with Schools for Haiti receives a high-quality education, all academic materials and supplies, daily meals, and the chance to dream.
+ 194 active teachers
→ Reality: More than 2,000 schools have shut down in the past year due to gang violence, and lack of funding. Many teachers have fled their posts or gone unpaid for months.
Impact: We not only employ Haitian educators — we invest in their training and create stable, dignified jobs in education.
+ 100 safe, well-equipped classrooms
→ Reality: Countless classrooms across Haiti are overcrowded, under-resourced, or nonexistent. Some students learn under tarps or trees — others not at all.
Impact: Our schools provide clean, structured learning environments with desks, supplies, chalkboards, solar systems for electricity and internet, computer labs and dedicated leadership.
+ Enrichment beyond the basics: English, technology, music, art, public speaking
→ Reality: Most Haitian schools lack books, let alone enrichment. Literacy rates sit around 53%, and STEM exposure is rare.
Impact: Our students gain real-world skills — from technology and language proficiency to creative expression — equipping them for a future beyond poverty.
NOURISHMENT: Feeding Minds and Bodies
+ 447,000 meals served in 2023–2024
→ Reality: 4.9 million Haitians go hungry daily — including 2.4 million children. Hunger is the #1 barrier to school attendance. Only 1 in 4 schools in Haiti offer any kind of canteen program. When food is scarce, school takes a back seat.
Impact: Through trusted vendors and strong logistics, we maintain food security for thousands — even when markets collapse.
+ 105,000 holiday meals delivered over Christmas break
→ Reality: For many families, school breaks are not joyful — they are terrifying gaps in food access.
Impact: We fill that gap, delivering family-sized meal kits that feed students and their households for days during closures.
+ Over 97,000 lbs of rice, 23,000 lbs of beans, 12,000 green onions, and 31,000 tins of fish used in school kitchens last year
→ Reality: Inflation, fuel scarcity, and blocked supply routes have made everyday staples prohibitively expensive.
Impact: Our food program ensures children don’t have to choose between eating and learning.
EMPLOYMENT & DIGNITY: Rebuilding from Within
+ 250+ locals employed as teachers, cooks, janitors, principals, and support staff
→ Reality: Haiti’s unemployment rate is estimated near 70%. For most families, formal employment is simply out of reach. Informal work is irregular, underpaid, and often unsafe.
Impact: We don’t just create jobs — we create purpose. Every employee at Schools for Haiti contributes to the wellbeing of a child and the health of a community. By investing in local talent, we strengthen families and circulate wages back into the Haitian economy.
+ 2 security guards, 6 service team members, 11 janitors, 16 cooks — every person matters
→ Reality: In a country gripped by insecurity and displacement, thousands have lost access to steady income and safe workplaces.
Impact: At Schools for Haiti, no job is small. Whether preparing meals, securing a campus, or sweeping a classroom, these team members help create a safe, structured, and loving environment — one child, one school, one village at a time.
RESILIENCE IN CRISIS: Standing Strong When Others Fall
+ Never shut down — even when others did
→ Reality: Gang violence and political instability have forced widespread school closures across Haiti. In some regions, even hospitals, banks, and churches are no longer operational.
Impact: Schools for Haiti has remained open and steadfast, even during the most dangerous and uncertain times. Why? Because when schools close, children don’t just fall behind — they fall into deeper poverty, vulnerability, and despair. We are committed to being the constant.
+ All 10 schools remain operational in the Montrouis/St. Marc region
→ Reality: Major cities like Port-au-Prince have been paralyzed by roadblocks, fuel shortages, kidnappings, and armed conflict. Entire neighborhoods have become no-go zones for aid organizations.
Impact: Thanks to strong community relationships, local leadership, and strategic planning, all ten of our campuses are functioning — feeding, educating, and employing Haitians every day. Where others have pulled out, we have pressed in. And we’re not going anywhere!!
